Is it really the same item? Model numbers, bundles and look-alikes
Updated October 30, 2026
A lower price only counts if it’s for the same thing. Two listings can share a name and a photo and still be different products: an older model, a different storage size, a bundle without the charger. A minute of checking keeps a “deal” from being a different item at a lower price.
The surest match: the product code
Most products carry a barcode number, the UPC (or EAN outside the US), and a manufacturer’s model number. When two listings show the same UPC or the same full model number, they’re the same product. Search KeepHawk by either one and it matches on the code first.
- Use the full model number. The letters at the end often mean something: a color, a region, a year, or a retailer-only version.
- Watch the storage and size. 128 GB and 256 GB, or a 55-inch and a 65-inch, are different products with different prices, even under one product name.
- Check the year or generation. “2nd generation” and “3rd generation” can look identical in photos.
Bundles and what’s in the box
A bundle with an extra case or game can look expensive next to the bare item, and a bare listing can look cheap because it leaves something out. Read the “what’s included” list on each store’s page: a missing charger, cable or remote is a cost you’ll pay later.
Look-alikes
Third-party accessories, “compatible” parts and refills are often listed beside the brand’s own. They can be fine, but they aren’t the same item. If the brand matters to you, check the brand and the seller, not only the photo.
A quick check
- Same UPC or the same full model number
- Same size, storage, color and generation
- Same contents in the box
- Same condition: new, open-box and refurbished are different offers (see the next guide)
