New, open-box, refurbished, used: what you can resell it as
Updated October 26, 2026
The condition you buy in decides how you can honestly list the item, and the listing decides the price buyers will pay. An open-box bargain is only a bargain if you price the resale as open-box too.
What each condition resells as
| You buy | You can list it as | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| New | New | Sealed and unused. List it as New only if it stays sealed. |
| Open-box | Open box | Opened but unused, or returned. Even if it looks new, it is an open-box listing, priced below New. |
| Refurbished | Used | Repaired and tested. On eBay, only approved sellers may list as refurbished, so most resellers list it as Used. |
| Used | Used | Owned and used before. The grade (like new, very good, good, acceptable) sets the price. |
| For parts | For parts or not working | Doesn’t fully work. Sold for parts or repair, and must be described that way. |
Before you buy
- Price the resale for the condition you can list, not the condition it looks.
- Check the grade the store gives (open-box good, used very good): it moves the price.
- Check whether the warranty carries over to your buyer; many don’t for resold items.
- Describe condition honestly: returns and disputes cost more than a lower price.
On KeepHawk, every offer shows its condition and grade, and what it resells as when you add a resale price. You can filter a search by condition.
