New, open-box or refurbished: what you get as a buyer

Updated October 30, 2026

The same product can be sold in several conditions at very different prices. The saving can be real, but each condition comes with its own trade-offs. The words aren’t used the same way everywhere, so the store’s own page always has the final say.

What each one usually means

ConditionUsuallyCheck
NewSealed, unused, everything in the box, the full manufacturer’s warranty. The seller: a new item from an unknown seller may not carry the manufacturer’s warranty.
Open-boxOpened, often returned by another buyer, inspected and resold. Many stores grade it (for example “excellent” or “good”).The grade, what’s missing from the box, and whether the warranty and return window are the same as new.
RefurbishedRepaired or restored to working order, then tested. “Manufacturer refurbished” is done by the brand; “seller refurbished” by someone else.Who refurbished it, how long its warranty is, and any cosmetic marks listed.
UsedSold as it is, with wear. Warranty and returns vary the most.Photos of the actual item, the seller’s return policy, and the battery health for phones and laptops.

When open-box or refurbished is worth it

How KeepHawk shows it

Every offer shows its condition and the store’s own grade, and you can filter a search to the conditions you want. An open-box offer is never shown as new.
